Addicted To Love!

Turns out that drugs, gambling and cigarettes are not the only common addictions people have.

Scientists have now linked the origin of love to the same part of the brain that is linked to drug addiction.  It forms a habit out of the feelings of pleasure received from sexual desire.  It is this same mechanism that makes a drug addict want their next ‘hit’.

So, now for the science bit! Scientists at Pfaus mapped the feelings of love and desire in the brain and studied what happened when people viewed erotic images of their spouses and partners.  Data pooled from twenty different studies shown that two brain structures, the insula and striatum, play major parts in love and sexual desire.

Viewing the images activated different areas of the striatum, a region located deep in the cerebral cortex.  Sexual desire stimulated the same “reward” neurons as those that respond to anything that gives us pleasure.

It is not surprising that the “love area” was involved in a more complex conditioning process that drives the need to repeat high-value reward sensations.

So, was Robert Palmer was right all along when he sang about being “Addicted to Love”?
