Tips for Successful Online Dating – Part 2

Following on from our Tips for Successful Online Dating – Part 1 blog that covered profile and picture, here are some more useful tips to make sure you get the most out of online dating.

The Username

  • Don’t be too much of a smart ass, it’s fine to select a name that’s clever, but don’t pick something that will likely go over people’s heads or come off as unapproachable.
  • If the name you want is taken, don’t try to force one. Some people have usernames where you would need MI5 to crack the code – as all the numbers and letters jumbled together make it really hard to figure out what it means.
  • Stay clear of anything too provocative as you may come across as sleazy. “Using something like ‘sexy abs’ as a username is not the impression you want to give if you’re looking for a long term partner,” our dating expert Ger says.

The Headline or Status Line

  • Your headline should answer a basic question such as “What am I looking for in a man/woman?” Your answer should be fun and playful and prompt people to want to click into your profile to find out more about you.  Ger says “Something like ‘This week I’m looking for a great dinner date in Dublin’, or ‘I’d like to try ice-skating in Cork’, is a good way to make your profile stand out.”
  • Like the username, stay away from being too clever and don’t over think it. “When you use too many puns people won’t know who you really are or what you’re about,” Ger says.

The Description

  • Create three separate paragraphs. The first, Ger says, should be about who you are and what you like to do. The second should contain things such as what you like and personality traits—anything that is original and makes you stand out from the crowd. The last paragraph should detail a snap shot of your current life right now including the most recent books you’ve read, what films you like or where your last holiday was.
  • Be brief. No one wants a thesis, this can bore people plus you don’t want to reveal too much about yourself too soon.
  • Be as original as possible. Tell your potential dates if you took a week off from work to follow U2 on their European tour. Let them know about your collection of original Beatles records! It’s the best way to stand out and makes people notice you.
  • Last but not least – spell check!
