Top Tips For Safe Online Dating

It’s been a while since we blogged here at CupidRocks, so we said we’d kick back into gear (for now anyway!) with a topical blog – tips on for safe online dating.

With online dating becoming more and more popular in Ireland, it’s important to stay safe while cyber-dating!

Do not give out personal information online

Personal information that would let someone find you offline should not be shared online. For example, your full name, where you work, where you live and your phone number.  Don’t give out any of this information until you feel comfortable with the person and feel you are ready to take things further.

Don’t rush into things

Take your time to try to get to know the person online first. Be comfortable with that person before you agree to meet with them. Also use your instinct, if something doesn’t feel right then maybe it isn’t. Keep your wits and instincts about you.

Speak to them before you meet

You may get on like a house on fire over emails, but you can tell a lot from a person from the tone of their voice.  Also, it’s important to find out if the connection you have online still exists when you speak to them.

Use common sense

The whole point of online dating is to meet someone you are compatible with.  It’s not the time to re-invent yourself and do things you wouldn’t normally do.  So while it may sound romantic and exciting to agree to meet someone you hardly know at Dublin airport and fly to Vegas, it isn’t common sense to do so.  If you are meant to be together you will have plenty of time to go on adventures together, once you get to know each other properly.

The first date should always be in public.

When you do agree to meet make sure it is somewhere open with plenty of people around.  A restaurant is ideal.  If you bring your own car, park it in a safe, well-lit place or arrange for a friend to pick you up. Don’t drink too much – you want to remain in control of all your senses.

Most importantly – always, always tell someone where you are going and who you are going to meet.  Tell them what time you expect the date to be over at, and arrange to call them once you are safely home.

The most important tip though is to relax, have fun and enjoy all the butterflies that come with a first date – just make sure you stay safe!

Happy Dating!
